Catching up just in time for a Summer Recap.
First installment is an album of shots Eric sent in
from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival at the end of June.
Also a few shots of rafters in the canyon outside Fort Collins,
a lunch stop in Vail, and one oh-so-summery croquet shot of Mommy. . .

We're heading east tomorrow to visit the Right Coast folks.
Here is an album of shots from the Grandparent visit in San Diego last month.
If anyone who has pics of the Styn/Shikles Fiesta Del Sol gathering last month or the Telluride Bluegrass Festival last week could send files, I would appreciate it . . .

Mexico!
Of the shots I took myself, this one is my favorite.
While I sort through the others, I thought I would try
a little experiment with the great photos
from Grandpa ("Popop") Shikles.
Feedback is appreciated . . .

What a Week, Last Week . . .
Sunday morning, after returning from Mexico the night before,
we got some very sad news:
GreatGrandpa Nowsch had died while we were gone.
He was a great man who had a profound impact on my life.
Monday it rained all day.
Tuesday and Wednesday dumped 3 feet of snow in 36 hours.
Tree limbs rained down, roofs collapsed, and the town shut down.
Thursday we were at war . . .
I will post pictures from Mexico
and the Blizzard of Aught 3 very soon.
I don't have any pictures of the war.

I know it's been a while! In fact I couldn't believe how much Harper had changed in the week and a half I was gone on the big drive from Alaska in the bus.
Before I left she was discovering the walker and the spring swing.
Now she's sitting up strong, eating real food, even drinking water out of a cup.
There were two particular developments that really took me by surprise though. . .
Sunday, July 22, 2001
We had a great visit with the grandparents in Escondido,
Including a visit to our favorite Avocado Grove!
Harper looks like she likes the book,
She may even be reading it . . ., but
Turns out it's just the tastiest story she's seen yet.

Better late than never . . . . Here are the shots from our July 4th camping trip; Harper floating in her boat on Fish creek and the Huson River in Saugerties, New York. We're in San Diego now with Uncle Ron and Aunt Susie (we just got back from a weekend in Huntington Beach.) Plus, southern California has 3 more great grandparents (for a total of 5) and the grooviest cousins ever. Pictures to follow . . . .
Tuesday, July 03, 2001
We have been enjoying the unending hospitality and generosity of Uncle Greg and Aunt Anna (Annta?) in their beautiful new home. Here are some Harper shots from our visit. Harper also had her very first campout last weekend. Four nights in a tent braving the elements, plus a music festival on Saturday; she did great! I hope to have photos posted by tomorrow evening . . .
Monday, June 18, 2001
What a weekend! Three parties in two days: a Saturday picnic (anyone have digital pictures?), a Wedding reception, and Fathers Day. All three of us are welcoming a day of rest (while everyone else goes back to work of course.)
Linda and Andy were kind enough to loan us their Swing and Exer-Saucer; Harper is in her glory. If you like to see Harper Lee smile, check out these shots.

Pulling Dad's beard, a new favorite pastime . . .
We've been on the road for 2 weeks now: Roadtrip from Fairbanks to Haines through Canada, Three days on an Alaska Ferry through the Inside Passage, another drive from Bellingham (with a stop for a very nice lunch with Shirley in Seattle) to Portland Oregon for a great week with Harper's Grandparents. Tuesday we all got on a jet plane for a visit to Connecticut 'til the 5th of July. More pictures are on the way (I have been computer challenged lately, but it looks like I'm back in business.) Harper is such a GREAT traveller; she makes friends from coast to coast and likes to sleep in moving vehicles of all kinds. Her parents and fellow passengers are grateful for her sweet disposition and her Need for Nappin'.

Just click on any of the photos (except the sleeping one on top) or underlined text to the left and you will go to the relevant photo group. New Hawaii updates will be going online through the weekend so stay tuned. If you have any problems or find any glitches in the new setup, please email me. Thanks for visiting.

 The famous Hawaiian Sink Bath
Harper's back in Alaska. She did great on her trip, handling every flight like a champ. Any venting that needed to be done could wait for the terminal or, better yet, the condo on arrival. Otherwise she enjoyed the warm breezes, dips in the pool, and all sorts of attention from Grandma and Grandpa. I started sorting through all the photos and should have a postable group by the weekend. Thanks for your patience . . .

Aloha From Hawaii! Harper Lee is on holiday in the islands so there won't be any photo updates 'til next week. It will be worth the wait though, so check back next week. Kauai is beautiful; the weather and the scenery are just wonderful. We've been sunning and enjoying the fresh air (and the fresh fruit). Got caught in the rain during our walk yesterday, but we had a great rainbow and it just added to the adventure . . .

 Sleeping like babies . . .
Sunday, March 18, 2001
When I was in the grocery store one day last week, my entire conversation with the check-out guy was him saying this as he scanned my purchases:
"We got cookies; "We got Huggies. "We got all sortsa fun stuff. (he looks up) "We are livin' it up in this household aren't we. . .?"
There seemed no proper response
Do you think she looks like me?

Welcome to HarperLee.net! The photos have been scrolling since the beginning, and here is the Blog. In honor of Harper's first six weeks, we have installed this running commentary. We will update as inspiration and opportunity allow. Thanks for stopping by. In the meantime, I have transferred some thoughts from my personal Blog that I posted as the big day approached and since Harper Lee came into our lives: Sunday, February 18, 2001Dave Barry waxing relevant: If it looks like a dad, talks like a dad, it's a duck Saturday, February 17, 2001I have received the most inspiring correspondence lately from young fathers welcoming me to the club.
From my good friend Andre:
Hello to all,
Just a note to let you know that hearing you talk about Harper Lee brought me right back to the pride and joy I felt a year ago when Kayla Marie entered the world. There can be no better feeling than that of being a parent. For all those people who say that young parents always want to bore them with stories, you now understand why. With each tiny thing, no matter how insignificant, that your baby does, you are wowed that you could possibly be responsible for such an incredible young person. Enjoy all the precious moments and thank you for reminding me how proud I am to be Kayla's father and the joy that she brings me each and every day.
Andre
and from my Cool Cousin Mike:
Hey Rob,
I just wanted to shoot you a note and see how Fatherhood is treating you. It is crazy at first you realize the magnitude of this commitment and suddenly seeing life through your parents eyes. There is no way to describe the feelings and love you have for your child but there is nothing in life richer than that. Hunter the other day pointed out the smoke coming from the power plant and told Kara and I they where making clouds. With their fresh imaginative view of the world they give you a great excuse to be a kid again help you view the world in the coolest way.
Take care..Mike
Meanwhile, I've emailed, voicemailed, even numeric paged my Uncle George and not a peep . . .Go figure. Thursday, February 08, 2001The moon is full, the night is still, and my baby girl is home in her cradle. Life is good.
Three women made me cry in 24 hours . . .
Tracy is so strong and lovely; she kicked butt this week. I cried.
Harper Lee is so perfect and beautiful; she stole my heart. I cried.
Wednesday morning I came home and blogged (a verb for the 21st century for sure) that my baby girl had come into the world.
Minutes later, from a perfect stranger, I received this email:
what an uplifting read to start my day. between the ultrasound, the charlottes web quote, and the WONDERFUL name youre giving your baby, i cant stop smiling.
my brother just made me an aunt about six months ago with his new son, whom is named Atticus... im sure you understand the power of that name, and the power of such a tiny human being.
best wishes for the future, and enjoy the silence while you can!
kelly
I immediately burst into tears, grabbed my coat, and drove back to the hospital as fast as I could. I could not bear to spend one more moment away from my ladies.
I cried the whole way there. Wednesday, February 07, 2001Harper Lee Lowrey was born in Fairbanks, Alaska at 6:34pm Alaska Time, yesterday February 6, 2001. 7 pounds 3 ounces, 21 inches long, and perfectly healthy. Mom and baby girl came through with flying colors and were resting peacefully when last seen. Monday, January 29, 2001What a Perfect Time for Burning Man Tickets to arrive! So much preparation to be making it up as you go along. Life imitating art I suppose. . . Thursday, January 25, 20012 weeks without a blog; things have just been crazy. 13 days to the big delivery. We're as ready as we can be, and utterly unprepared at the same time. Honestly, we have no idea what to expect, and that's not even counting the "known surprises." When, how, and what gender are the "known surprises." I'm sure we will soon find that those are the small things. What have we created? What will our spawn be like? Will it like us? Our lives will soon take a sudden and powerful 90 degree turn . . .
